The Corolla was first introduced by the Japanese automotive manufacturer Toyota Motor Corporation ((トヨタ自動車株式会社 ) in 1966 as a series of compact cars. With more than 40 million Corollas sold to date, it is one of the best-selling car models in the world. Since 1980, when Corollas were imported to Taiwan, the car model also occupied the Taiwanese automotive market for years, becoming a generational symbol embedded in the memory of the people. Coincidentally, my father   also has a Corolla Generation E100, which has been always the most important ‘transport tool’ of my family. It takes us to the beach, the mountains, and accompanies us in our experience of all kinds of adventures.

However, like other typical Asian metropolises, Taipei, the city where my father lives, also suffers from its excessive number of vehicles and lack of parking space. The exhausting search for a place to park has been a nightmare after all the wonderful trips, the consequence being that my father feels pressured every time we use his Corolla.

In the work The Toyota, I used inflatable material to recreate a model of my father’s car, namely, an inflatable dummy Toyota Corolla E100 that can be easily folded and stored in a trunk, or rapidly deployed to occupy a parking lot. Here, the inflatable car functions as an embodiment of the original, an agent to declare the authority of ownership.
